Stainless Steel Coatings

Cor-Pro Systems Inc. is the leading company in providing fast and high quality corrosion protection in Houston, TX and other areas in the Gulf Coast.

Stainless steel is a common choice in different industries because of its strong resistance to corrosion. Furthermore, stainless steel’s durability makes it a top choice among industry experts.

Stainless steel is still prone to corrosive agents, thus requiring efficient corrosion protection.

However, there are instances that may require stainless steel to have additional coatings to improve the corrosion-resisting properties of equipment. Stainless steel coatings can increase the lifespan and serviceability of stainless steel equipment by up to 60 percent.

Stainless Steel Properties

Unlike other alloys, stainless steel does not readily react to corrosive agents like air or water and exhibit signs of corrosion such as staining. However, stainless steel is not corrosion proof, and there are environments that can weather stainless steel quicker. Areas with poor circulation or low-oxygen, high-salinity environments can easily corrode stainless steel.

Stainless steel’s corrosion-resistant properties are due to the chromium content, which should be a minimum of 10.5 percent per mass. Chromium creates a passive film of chromium oxide, a compound that blocks the chemical reaction between oxygen and the steel surface.

While stainless steel can inhibit corrosion better than other types of alloy, the use of stainless steel coatings can further improve the durability of stainless steel and reduce the need for periodic maintenance or replacement.

Surface Preparation

To start with stainless steel coating, the equipment must first be removed of contaminants through abrasive blasting. Aside from removing excess particles like dust, oil, and moisture, abrasive blasting can also remove areas that exhibit signs of corrosion. The medium for stainless steel blasting should be free from iron particles to avoid contamination. The use of non-metallic medium for abrasive blasting is a must.

Coatings Classification

The type of coating to be used on stainless steel will depend on the type of environment where the equipment will operate. With the right type of coating used as well as process of application, clients can maximize the potential stainless steel coatings at no extra cost.

In accordance with ISO 12944 and ISO 9233, here are the classifications of stainless steel coatings and their proper application based on the operating environment of the alloy. Take note that MIO stands for Micaeous Iron Oxide:

  • C3 (Medium): Two pack epoxy or polyurethane primer suitable for stainless steel at 30-50 micron dry, FOLLOWED BY High solids polyurethane finish at 100 micron dry. This works best on rural and urban areas with low sulphur dioxide, acid, alkali and salt pollution.
  • C4 (High): Two pack epoxy or polyurethane primer suitable for stainless steel at 30-50 micron dry, FOLLOWED BY High build epoxy MIO* at 100 mm dry, FOLLOWED BY Re-coatable polyurethane finish at 60 micron dry. Recommended for stainless steel equipment in urban and industrial areas with moderate sulphur dioxide and/or coastal areas with low salinity.
  • C5I (Very High): Two pack epoxy or polyurethane primer suitable for stainless steel at 30-50 micron dry, FOLLOWED BY High build epoxy MIO* at 200 micron dry (one or two coats), FOLLOWED BY Re-coatable polyurethane finish at 60 micron dry. Used on alloys with in industrial areas with high humidity and aggressive atmospheres.
  • C5M (Very High): Two pack epoxy or polyurethane primer suitable for stainless steel at 30-50 micron dry, FOLLOWED BY High build epoxy MIO* at 200 micron dry (one or two coats), FOLLOWED BY Re-coatable polyurethane finish at 60 micron dry. Effective in coastal and offshore areas with high salinity.
