PTFE / Fluoropolymer Coatings

Cor-Pro Systems Inc. is the leading provider of PTFE / Fluoropolymer coating services in Houston, Texas and nearby Gulf Coast areas.

corrosion resistant paint

PTFE / Fluoropolymer coatings are chemical compounds that contain strong carbon-flourine bonds. Because of its tough qualities, PTFE and fluoropolymer coatings are used in corrosion management as a first line of defense against corrosive agents.

With many benefits including high friction, heat, abrasion, galling, and chemical resistance, PTFE / Fluoropolymer coatings are popularly used in various industries.

Corrosion Protection: What Are PTFE / Fluoroploymers?

Fluoropolymer coatings combine various industrial resins with fluoropolymer materials, such as PTFE.  These coatings have exceptional dry lubrication, anti-galling, chemical resistance and heat stability properties.  Fluoropolymer coatings provide surprisingly good corrosion protection for a thin-film (1.0 mil / 25 micron) coating when used with a suitable pretreatment such as phosphate coating.

Fluoropolymer coatings are widely used for corrosion protection when dimensional tolerances do not permit a thicker coating.  Fluoropolymer coatings are also well known for their non-stick or release properties.

PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) Coatings are another name for Fluoropolymer, Xylan® or Teflon® coatings.

Corrosion besets industries on a daily basis. Estimated at more than 3% of the entire world’s GDP, corrosion costs have steadily ballooned over the decade. In the US, corrosion costs surpassed the $1 trillion mark last year making it one of the largest single expenses in the US economy.

With losses increasing at an all-time high, corrosion protection is now an integral part of running big businesses and industries. One of the most common corrosion protection coatings are PTFE and Fluoropolymer.

The strong chemical makeup of PTFE and fluoropolymers make it an ideal and effective choice across industries. When applied to parts and equipment, the high-molecular-weight compound made of strong carbon-fluorine bonds create a hard coating finish that can be used in a variety of ways.

Applications And Uses Of PTFE / Fluoropolymers

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)

PTFE coatings are commonly applied to critical industrial equipment such as carbon steel, stainless steel, steel alloys, brass, and other like materials. PTFE can also be applied to non-metallic components such as glass, rubber, and plastic.

Other common uses of PTFE coatings include:

  • Protective lining used in hose assemblies and industrial pipe lines owing to its non-reactive and high-temperature resistance – PTFE coated materials are known to deteriorate slower than traditional metal pipes
  • Applied to ball bearings, gears, and other small component parts to reduce friction and abrasion, thereby preventing overall wear and tear
  • PTFE coated filters are extensively used as dust collector in high temperature and high particulate loads such as power plants, cement production, and steel foundries

Fluoropolymers

Fluoropolymer is the base ingredient of many known trademarked brands including Teflon, Xylan, and Fluon.

Fluoropolymer coatings in particular, are a mixture of high-performing resins and fluoropolymer lubricants that are applied as dry film.

The end-product is a hard, slick coating that can be used in a variety of industrial parts and equipment. Some known benefits of fluoropolymer coatings include:

  • Excellent non-stick properties
  • Reduces friction
  • Resists corrosion
  • Withstands high temperature
  • Acts as insulators
  • Non-wetting
  • Resists abrasion and galling

Corrosion Protection: Why Are Coatings Important?

Companies can save up to 25 to 30% of annual corrosion costs in the US if they invest in quality coatings. Without proper coatings, corrosion can have damaging effects on valves, motors, pumps, fasteners, switches, belts, and other mechanical equipment.

In infrastructure, the annual direct cost is around $22.6 billion. Corrosion costs total $47.9 billion for utilities such as gas, water, and electricity.

Reduce costs

  • 25% of costs caused by corrosion is avoided by applying existing knowledge on corrosion protection such as coatings.

Reduce accidents

  • Work-related accidents cost the US $250 billion every year. A lot of those incidents are caused by faulty work equipment. If a structure is free of corrosion, the risk for accidents is significantly reduced.

Save time

  • In the event your equipment does falter due to corrosion, repairing it will take time. Once operations stop, the delay in production will also mean profit losses.
