Heavy Zinc MIL-DTL-16232 Type Z is a type of phosphate conversion coating applied on iron and steel parts and equipment. The end product is an adherent crystalline finish that works as an excellent base and pretreatment for complementary corrosion prevention methods such as oils and other treatments.

The thickness of heavy zinc phosphate coatings can range from 1,000 to 3,000 mg/ft2. It produces consistently uniform coatings applied via a coating bath or immersion. Depending on the supplemental treatment, heavy zinc phosphate coatings can withstand 48-480 hours of neutral salt spray exposure per ASTM method B-117.
